چکیده

Medical application of radiation began a few months after the discovery of X-rays by the German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen more than 100 years ago. The harmful biological effects of ionizing radiation became apparent shortly after its utilization. Since 1920, health professionals in contact with radiation have worn lead protective clothing to reduce the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. Brenner et al have reported that an increase in carcinogenic risk is observed when the acute radiation exposure dose reaches 10–50mSv, whereas the carcinogenic risk for long-term radiation exposure occurs at a higher accumulated dose of 50–100 mSv.1 Recently, many studies have been performed on medical radiation protection for patients and medical professionals using thermoluminescent dosimetry to measure the radiation dose received at the body surface.2,3 Data from the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute ORIGINAL ARTICLE

Health effects of medical radiation on cardiologists who perform cardiac catheterization.

BACKGROUND We investigated the health effects of low-dose radiation on cardiologists exposed to scattered radiation while performing cardiac catheterization (CC) in a hospital setting from 2003 to 2006. METHODS We performed a 4-year retrospective study on 2, 292 medical doctors, using claims data from all contracted hospitals of the Bureau of National Health Insurance, Taiwan. We gathered sta...

Brain tumours among interventional cardiologists: a cause for alarm? Report of four new cases from two cities and a review of the literature.

AIMS Interventional cardiologists who work in cardiac catheterisation laboratories are exposed to low doses of ionising radiation that could pose a health hazard. DNA damage is considered to be the main initiating event by which radiation damage to cells results in development of cancer. METHODS AND RESULTS We report on four interventional cardiologists, all with brain malignancies in the lef...

The biological effects of diagnostic cardiac imaging on chronically exposed physicians: the importance of being non-ionizing

Ultrasounds and ionizing radiation are extensively used for diagnostic applications in the cardiology clinical practice. This paper reviewed the available information on occupational risk of the cardiologists who perform, every day, cardiac imaging procedures. At the moment, there are no consistent evidence that exposure to medical ultrasound is capable of inducing genetic effects, and represen...

Radiation safety and vascular access: attitudes among cardiologists worldwide.

OBJECTIVES To determine opinions and perceptions of interventional cardiologists on the topic of radiation and vascular access choice. BACKGROUND Transradial approach for cardiac catheterization has been increasing in popularity worldwide. There is evidence that transradial access (TRA) may be associated with increasing radiation doses compared to transfemoral access (TFA). METHODS We distr...
